Microsoft’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer unveiled the Windows Phone 7 at Mobile World Congress (MWC). An advanced version of the currently available Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, the new platform will feature a dynamic screen allowing users to install their favourite icon, from music, to contacts and social networks. Finally, Microsoft has introduced a new mobile experience that can compete with Apple iPhone and Google Android. Windows 7 Phone displays a completely different interface. Instead of traditional icon thumbnails, Microsoft has optimised the home screen with tiles that are scrollable, customisable, updated dynamically and heavily focused on social media. Tiles are also designed in a way that these can be easily integrated with other Microsoft products such as Office, Outlook, the music player Zune and the gaming platform X-Box Live. Equipped with capacitive touch interface, Windows new OS introduces the concept of ‘hubs’ on-screen for people, pictures, office and mail applications, music and video. The entire phone is built around six hubs designed to focus on activities that matter the most: People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace and Office. The hubs are the core of navigation system which feature dedicated keys for start, search and back.Integrating the best of Zune via a music and video hub (with Zune Marketplace integration) and a built-in FM radio, Microsoft's Windows 7 Phone's set of specs for manufacturers to follow include a specific CPU, screen aspect ratio and resolution, memory, Bing and FM radio buttons and an all out ban on custom skins.Windows Phone 7 Series will arrive by the end of the year and it will be available through every significant carrier and manufacturer around the world.
