Assa Abloy, Choice Hotels Scandinavia and TeliaSonera are working together on a pilot project to replace hotel room keys with NFC-enabled mobile phones. With this technology, hotel guests can check-in and out by simply using their mobile phones. The technology makes it possible for hotel guests to check-in and out simply by using their mobile phones. In this trial, Samsung handsets enabled with NFC technology were given to the selected hotel guests. These guests booked their hotel rooms but instead of hotel keys they received the booking confirmation on their mobile phones. After checking in, the guests get a digital hotel room key confirmation on their mobile phone. Once you get the digital hotel room key, you can directly go to your room and hold your mobile phones close to the door lock to open it. While leaving, the hotel door gets automatically locked. All you need to do is to checkout on your mobile phone and the virtual key gets deactivated. NFC, Near Field Communication, is a short-range wireless communication technology standard that enables the exchange of data between devices over up to a 10 cm distance. The technology is expected to be integrated into the smartphones in the coming years. This technology can also be deployed for ticketing and card payments. The NFC trial is set to last four months. When this technology finally arrives, make sure your NFC-enabled mobile phone is fully charged when you plan to check-in at a hotel.
