
Facebook, Google Maps dominate mobile apps market

The most popular mobile apps used across smartphone platforms are Facebook and Google Maps, reveals Nielsen Wire in its "The State of Mobile Apps" report

Nielsen recently launched its 'App Playbook,' surveying more than 4,200 people who had downloaded an application in the past 30 days.The key findings of this survey state American wireless subscribers having a smartphone at Q4 2009 have gone up from 19% to 21% compared to the previous quarter.The key stats reveal that 14% of mobile subscribers have downloaded an app in the last 30 days. On an average, iPhone users had installed 37 apps, Android users downloaded 22 apps and an average of 13 apps downloaded via Windows Mobile.Facebook, Google Maps and Weather Channel are the most popular apps across nearly all smartphone platforms. On iPhone, Facebook was downloaded by 58% users over the last 30 days, iTunes by 48% iPhone users and Google Maps got downloaded by 47% of the users. Again on BlackBerry smartphones, Facebook enjoyed 51% download rate via users, 34% installed Google Maps and the Weather Channel app had a fair share of 28% usage. Nielsen study further revealed that Games were the most downloaded – both free and paid. Although, Facebook emerged the most popular app but MySpace is hugely popular among teens as well.On shopping, Amazon and eBay lead by 57% and 41% respectively. Imeem and Moviefone showed a higher proportion of young users. On the music front, iTunes, Pandora and Sirius XM appealed more to the males, while Yahoo Music almost evenly split (51/49).
