Mobile phone chargers in India might get 'Energy Star' levels much like what we see on electric appliances like ACs and fridges as BEE proposes the need of efficient mobile chargers

Charging devices for mobile phones or mobile chargers are indispensible to our mobile phones but we have probably never noticed how much electricity it consumes when it is not actively charging the mobilephone. According to Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of India cellphone chargers account for around 27% of household consumption of electricity by appliances on standby mode. To bring out an efficient solution, the BEE has proposed an energy efficiency standard and labelling scheme that will be voluntary to begin with and mandatory later, reports the Mint. The proposed ratings or “energy stars” will be based on the no-load power consumption level of an appliance and will be available for the consumer at points of sale, in product documentation and online. It is believed that the BEE has started a discussion with various handset manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung and Motorola abiut this. Western countries including the US and some Europen countries already have efficiency-rated mobile phones in use and it is believed that it reduces household electricity cunsumption by 50%.
