World's largest mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has unveiled its new monster S60 Symbian handset, the N97, another potential rival to Apple's iPhone. But will it be good enough to take the spotlight when the device hits the market early next year? It's not everyday that Nokia announces a stonker of a device, but today's one of those days with the announcement of a social networking touchscreen superhero, the Nokia N97. Its the second touchscreen phone announced the Finnish major in as many months. With a tip top 16:9, 3.5-inch touchscreen display concealing a full Qwerty keyboard, the N97 gives you the option of using either the virtual or hardware input modes for checking on your favourite sites or social networking tools. Accessing Facebook and Myspace from the home screen is now easier than ever and as it's a S60 device, the N97 features Nokia's widget interface, providing speedy access to all your favourite apps in just one click. It also supports uploading of your snaps and vids directly to the Share on Ovi service too. With such a generous widescreen display and a feature-rich music player (including access to the Nokia Music Store) it seems this flagship device is ideal for listening to music, watching videos or browsing the internet; and with internal storage of 32GB as standard (extendable up to 48GB with a 16GB SDHC card) running out of space for your favourite shows or music shouldn’t be a problem any time soon. Other onboard goodies include HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a generic 3.5mm headphone jack, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and A-GPS that together with the electronic compass makes it easy to go ‘So-Lo’ – updating your social networks with real-time information. Probably the most pleasing specification of the N97 is the claimed battery life; with a standby of around 400 hours and a full-use duration of a day and a half. If these claims are true we’ll be even more impressed than we already are by this stonking handset when it lands in the first half of 2009.
