It was Gee Pee mobiles which surprised everyone with their announcement of Rs 500 colour mobile phones for the Indian market. Now the major mobile manufacturers in India have probably taken a clue from that.

As reported in a recent ET news, Nokia, the finnish telecom giant, plans to launch handsets at a price range of Rs 1,000 in India. The company envisions a breakthrough in rural India's mobile telephony with their recent initiative. The projected Nokia devices will come with Nokia Life Tools to support rural India.

Nokia already offers tools for Agriculture services that cater to the information needs of farmers by providing information on seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, market prices, and weather (temperature, rainfall, wind conditions) via their mobile phones. However, the big news comes as the announcement of Rs 500 mobile phones by Nokia.

The company plans a limited number of mobile phones which will be available for a price as low as Rs 500. Nokia is already having its presence in the select rural market through its micro-finance schemes in India and the recent announcement is certainly going to bolster their place in the rural market segment in India.
