The proposed deadline by the Government of India to ban mobile handsets without the unique identification number came into effect from the midnight, 1 December 2009. As per Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), about 17-20 million mobile handsets would become ineffective if the deadline of November 30 remains. What's an IMEI number? For every mobile phone, there is a 15-digit unique number that helps service providers to keep track of your mobile phone. The IMEI number gets displayed on the operator’s network whenever a mobile user makes a call. Thus a valid IMEI number for any mobile phone becomes mandatory for national security concern. With this unique IMEI number, mobile operators can easily locate a handset with the help of Global Positioning System. Indian mobile market is a safe heaven for cheap imported mobiles. Out of these, many mobiles come with invalid IMEI number or without any unique IMEI number. Thus it became a serious concern for the Indian Government to tackle this big national security issue by proposing ban on the mobiles without authenticated IMEI number.
