
Telenor launches mobile services in India

Norwegian telecom operator, Telenor will initially start with seven telecom circles, or service areas competing with the other 11 players in the Indian mobile market. Telenor will offer the service under the brand name Uninor, a joint venture with Unitech Wireless. Unitech Wireless presently holds licenses to operate services in 22 circles in India."This is indeed a milestone in a longer journey to become a significant operator in India," said Stein-Erik Vellan, managing director of Unitech Wireless, the new mobile venture of Telenor and Indian property giant Unitech.Uninor is trying to tap the large market opportunity in India and aims for eight percent share of the Indian market by 2018. "My time is now" is the slogan used by Uninor to target India's youth population and millions of Indians without mobile handsets.The company has begun its GSM mobile service in 7 telecom circle in southern India, the northern state of Uttar Pradesh and the eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand.Uninor has presently introduced two tariff plans. 'Talkmore 29 paisa' would allow users to make calls at 29 paisa a minute and STD at 49 paisa a minute.The other plan 'Callmore 29 paisa' will offer local calls at 29 paise per minute and STD at 49 paise per minute with a daily rental of Rs 2.
