With Google's pie-chart indicating Android 2.2 popularity, developers can now finally breathe a sign of relief with a vast majority of Android handsets now running on Android 2.1 or above.
These ‘state of the OS’ announcements help developers check which iterations of Google’s operating system are most popular and then target their apps accordingly. So any users on pre 2.1 versions should really think about updating.

Sure the vast majority of Android users are now on Android 2.1 and Froyo, but once Gingerbread officially begins rolling out, Android 2.1 may be well relegated to the position currently occupied by Android 1.5.
Nevertheless, the stats do prove that Google is making progress and with Android phones continuing to grow in popularity, these numbers will spike.
