HTC disables use of custom ROMs on future smartphones

It appears HTC is blocking use of custom UI's on its smart phones starting from HTC Incredible S

Published on Mar 25, 2011

With recent news of google prohibiting custom UI's on Android 3.0, and now the jolt from HTC who is blocking custom ROMs on future handsets, it seems that the world of Android is heading in a totally different direction.

The news of HTC's latest move came via AndIRC who found that the HTC Incredible S includes a new signature check, just like the HTC Thunderbolt, that kicks in when attempting to flash a custom recovery. Once this signature check kicks in, you need to enter a HTC key, but if it’s anything other than the stock HTC key you won’t be granted access, which means there’s no way to flash the device with a custom ROM.

HTC has confirmed the news and has sighted a simple ‘catering to carriers' interests’ statement.

It seems bizarre why after all these years HTC has suddenly started becoming carrier conscious, specially at a time when it is carving a bigger name and recognition for itself.
