According to research firm, IDC windows 7 would surpass iphones by 2015, with Android occupying the first spot. The report attributes Windows 7's success to the Nokia/Microsoft partnership.
So basically what it says is that when the symbians are gone by 2012, which Nokia has clearly stated, Windows Phone 7 platform will prevail.

But will this be enough to beat Apple’s iOS, which powers its iPad, iPod and iPhone devices? We’re not sure, especially when you consider the current popularity of the Apple brand with the release of the iPad 2.
Nevertheless, the IDC concludes that the first Windows Phone 7-powered Nokia devices will launch by 2012. Come 2012, according to IDC, Windows Phone 7 will be the second biggest platform on the planet, ranking just below Android.
IDC reckons that Apple’s iPhone will grow 18.8 per cent between 2011 and 2015, slightly below the overall predicted market growth of 19.6 per cent.
Well, the bad news, unfortunately, falls exclusively on RIM – IDC predicts that it’ll drop its market share from 14.0 per cent to 13.7 per cent. Not good.
At present it’s difficult to say whether Windows Phone 7 will out grow Apple, especially since the Nokia/Microsoft deal is not yet finalised.
Well we have seen in the past, how things can change. Just few years back symbian was touted to be what windows 7 is and well we all know how that went down.
