RIM launches Blackberry Playbook Enterprise Tablet device

Published on Apr 1, 2011

Blackberry has finally rolled up its sleeves and is jumping in armed with deals and more exclusive deals. Just yesterday we had reported about RIM's deal with Intellectual Ventures which has granted it access to over 30,000 patents to RIM.

“Intellectual Ventures offers an efficient way to access the invention rights companies need to stay competitive within the market,” said Mario Obeidat,Intellectual Ventures’ head of telecom licensing.

There is no word on the exact details of the deal between RIM and Intellectual Ventures other than the fact that RIM now has access to 30,000 of its patents.

Now RIM has signed another deal and this time it is with Polar Mobile to produce exclusive apps for its tablet, PlayBook.

The move comes at the right time specially because as compared to Apple and Google, who  boast of almost 290,000 and 150,000 apps respectively, there are just about 20,000 RIM's app store.

Toronto-based Polar Mobile is a leading mobile content solutions provider that has already developed over 170 apps for RIM's BlackBerry and is likely to devlop 100 more apps this year alone.

This deal means that RIM's Playbook will be giving tough competition to iPad. Playbook is powered by a new powerful QNX operating system which RIM bought specifically for the PlayBook.

But with RIM's decision to run Android applications on its tablet, PlayBook users could get access to 200,000 more apps.

Polar Mobile has also reported to have been roped by Microsoft to build apps for its Windows smart phones.

RIM's PlayBook will be out to play on April 19. Equipped with wifi and 3G/4G wireless version, the tablet measures 7-inches and hence a lot more handy to carry around.

However that doesn't mean it will be a easy ride for Playbook which has to complete with a competitor which has already sold two million units since its release earlier this month.
