Nokia to launch 40 handsets this year

Published on Apr 5, 2011

This year Nokia is all set to launch a fleet of devices as per a recent news appearing on the Hindustan Times. The report suggests that a Nokia executive from the development department had told that Nokia will be launching 40 models in 2011 of which at least 30% would be smartphones.

Nokia is already facing a stiff competition in the global market from Chinese, Korean and Indian mobile phone manufacturers. The company is working hard to revive its brand, save the sinking Symbian ship, and improve on its market share which has dipped significantly over a period of time.

Besides, other brands like Apple, BlackBerry and Google have gained excellent market shares in the smartphone segment since the last two years, according to IDC (International Data Corporation) figures.

Although Nokia's performance in the smartphone or high-end segment is quite obvious but the bigger worry for the company has propped up in the budget segment devies as well with the rise of local players in Indian markets, at least.

India is one of the emerging markets where Nokia had done great business for years, but lately has faced fierce competition from Indian manufacturers who are presenting a broad array of mobile phones at pocket friendly prices.

D Shivakumar, vice president and managing director of Nokia India said, "things will become more interesting for the company and its customers after mid-April, when some of the planned mobiles will start to be released."

So, it is expected that India may get a chunk of these upcoming 40 handsets, when announced globally, within this financial year.
