Sony - yes you read it right, it's only Sony without Ericsson, is working on an Android 3.0-powered tablet device, which may hit the stores in the UK market first in the summer of year 2011.
Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer confirmed the news and said that Sony is aligning its first tablet with Apple’s market-leading iPad 2.
In short: Sony wants a piece of Apple’s pie.
The news comes via Japanese newspaper Nikkei, which has Stringer on record as saying that Sony will be joining LG and Samsung by releasing an Android 3.0-powered tablet device this summer. Android 3.0-powered tablet device this summer.
At present, not much is known about the Sony tablet device, apart from it being powered by Android 3.0.
Nevertheless, reports have surfaced online claiming that Sony will be making something of a departure from the standard iPad, Galaxy Tab, PlayBook fare, instead opting for a ‘curved design.’
Granted, this does sound a big bonkers - but it’s early days yet, so there’s no point jumping to conclusions.
One notable omission from Sony’s tablet plans is Ericsson, the company’s trusted partner in all things mobile.
From what we can gather, Sony looks to be going this one alone.
Whether this will work in its favour or not remains to be seen, but when you consider all the cool services Sony could include in its tablet – PS3 Suite, anyone? - it could shape up to be quite a contender.
Soon, after its launch in UK, we can also expect it coming to India in the near future.
