BlackBerry is going to get Augmented Reality browser

Published on May 13, 2011

The upcoming BlackBerry smartphones will come equipped with pre-installed Wikitude Augmented Reality (AR) browser.

This Augmented Reality Browser works through scanning your surrounding for Geo-referenced content using the gadget's camera and sensors to show the related information about the object over the screen.

The latest series of BlackBerry Bold and Touch smartphones with the BlackBerry 7 operating system will also now come integrated with the augmented reality browser.

The BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM), had also announced APIs (Application Programming Interface) for the newer 99xx Bold devices, so the company can provide the Augmented reality in its applications as well.

Martin Herdina, Wikitude's chief executive officer, stated, "The Wikitude team is very excited to see its AR browser as part of BlackBerry's new device proposition."

He also added, "BlackBerry's Super Apps concept is the perfect environment for Wikitude to show its full potential as it seamlessly integrates with other applications on the device."

As per Wikipedia, Augmented Reality is a term for live direct or an indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input, such as sound or graphics.

The Blackberry smartphones are embracing new technologies these days and the company is working on different verticals - be it the new OS or Bing for new BlackBerrys - to offer users the best experience on their devices.

We expect that the new Blackberrry devices equipped with Wikitude Augmented Reality browser may hit the global market very soon.
