Apple App Store now hosts over half a million apps

The Apple's App Store has reached new heights in just a few years from its launch in July, 2008. The app store is reportedly offering over 500,000 apps, which has been approved by U.S. App Store alone.

Apple’s App store is famous worldwide for its numerous categories providing a host of applications. The growing apps portfolio of Apple will definitely create trouble for its rivals such as Nokia's Ovi store, BlackBerry App World, Google's Android Market Place and more.

The app specialists Chop, 148apps and Chillingo have revealed the App Store milestone through an infographic. The App Store, which provides content for the Apple devices like iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, is now offering over half a million apps. Also, 37 per cent of the apps available to download are free of cost available at Apple App Store.

In the Apple App Store, games account for the most popular apps category at 15%. The second most frequented category is the electronic books section, which accounts for 14%. At third place is entertainment at 11% and education holds the fourth place at 8%. In the paid apps section, the most popular are Angry Birds, Flight Control, Moto Chaser and The Moron Test. Also, the average price for an app is about $3.64.

There is no formal confirmation from the company as of now, about over a million apps being approved yet. Whereas, it is expected that Apple would disclose it in the future of iOS and Mac OS X next month at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
