Apple launches iCloud services for free

Published on Jun 7, 2011

Steve Jobs is a happy man and so are the Apple iphone, iPad and iPod touch users. One of the most frustrating things encountered by users has been to keep all the devices in sync and now thanks to the revolutionary iCloud services, users can keep all the information and content up-to-date across all their devices. For example, when you start a pages document on your iPad, the Pages document will automatically be saved to iCloud, so you can immediately access it on your iPad or iPhone.

The iCloud facility which has been extended to the Mac and PC users as well, automatically and wirelessly stores your content in iCloud and then pushes it across all your devices. Speaking at the WWDC 2011, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, said, “iCloud keeps your important information and content up to date across all your devices. All of this happens automatically and wirelessly, and because it’s integrated into our apps you don’t even need to think about it—it all just works.”

What shocked the audience was Steve Jobs revelation that the company will not be charging anything for the cloud. The iCloud will be made available this fall for free to users on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 5. iCloud includes 5GB of free cloud storage for Mail, Document Storage and Backup. In fact purchased music, apps, books and Photo Stream do not count against the storage limit. The iCloud beta and Cloud Storage APIs are available immediately to iOS and Mac Developer Program members at developer.apple.com.

This free iCloud also offers a basket of services like:

iCloud Backup

Users can now be at peace as iCloud Back up will back up content like music, apps and books, photos, videos device settings and app data on iOS devices to iCloud daily over Wi-Fi when you charge your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

iCloud Storage

This service will  store all documents created using iCloud Storage APIs, and automatically pushe them to all your devices. Users get up to 5GB of free storage for their mail, documents and backup—which is more amazing since the storage for music, apps and books purchased from Apple, and the storage required by Photo Stream doesn’t count towards this 5GB total.

iCloud Photo

This innovative Photo Stream service automatically uploads the photos you capture and  imports it to any of the devices and wirelessly pushes them to all your devices even Apple TV and computers.

Cloud iTunes

We are familiar with itunes, but now you using the iTunes iCloud you can download your previously purchased iTunes music to all your iOS devices at no additional cost. In addition to this now music that is not from iTunes can be matched using iTunes Match. The iTunes match replaces your music with a 256 kbps AAC DRM-free version across its 18 million songs in the iTunes Store and makes it ready for you within minutes. According to jobs, "this is the first time we've seen this in the music industry -- no charge for multiple downloads to different devices."

iCloud MobileMe services

In addition the former MobileMe services has also been re-architected and rewritten to work seamlessly with iCloud. Using this service, users can now share calendars with friends and family, and the ad-free push Mail account is hosted at me.com. Now your inbox and mailboxes will be updated across all your iOS devices and computers.

App Store and iBookstore

Now you can also download purchased iOS apps and books across all your devices without paying a dime. Also the App Store and iBookstore will feature a purchase history, so if you want to download something you have already purchased before to your another device, simply tap the iCloud icon and download it for free!

Apple anticipates a heavy demand for the iCloud services and has invested over $500 million in its Maiden data center to support the users iCloud demands.
