Twitter introduces URL shortening service

Published on Jun 10, 2011

Great news for twitterholics! The popular micro-blogging site seem to have finally woken up from its slumber and launched the much needed  URL shortening service. Initially it was quite a clunky process to tweet anything from the mobile phones specially if the URL was long.

The mobile users were forced to open a third party application to shorten the URL, but no more. The new service is inbuilt in twitter, so mobile users can simply paste a link into the Tweet box on Twitter.com and the URL will automatically shorten. Now no more going to bit.ly  or tinyurl, you can get link shortening right from the Tweet box on Twitter.com. The link no matter how long it is will automatically be shortened to up to 19 characters.

Twitter tweeted, "sharing links on Twitter.com is now simple and instant. Plus, since we show a shortened version of the original link, people will know which site the link points to.” This service also has an increased security cover and if users click on any malicious links they will be warned.

This URL shortening service will make twitter more efficient and less clunky and also keep the twitterholics engaged within the site sharing content, web sites, photos and videos with ease.

Twitter has made several other changes in the past to gain back control from the third party applications. Twitter previously acquired engagement platform TweetDeck, and launched photo sharing platform.

According to reports, Twitter is likely to add a  hosted document- or file-upload service which can be accessed directly from Twitter.com or a smartphone.
