Nokia N9: Why Nokia should not be too excited?

Chethan Rao

Nokia recently unveiled its flagship device N9. Know your mobile takes a closer look at the device to see if it has what it takes to be a "market disrupting device"

Is N9 really a "market disruptive device"?

Published on Jun 22, 2011

By now we would all be well aware of the new Nokia N9 being announced by the company at the Nokia Connection Event in Singapore. And from the glimpses that we have had so far, it looks like a pretty neat device. Nokia is of the opinion that the N9 will change the market considerably, though there’s little info on whether this was the “market disrupting device” that Nokia was talking about. But from the amount of hype this new device has generated it certainly looks like a competition.

And with the announcement of the device, there will be a few questions asked. With the likes  of Android and other platforms growing at a rapid pace, one would imagine if this device is too little too late. This in fact will be the first Nokia device to feature a 1GHz CPU which will be welcome,d no doubt. But the fact that we have already seen a bunch of 1GHz monsters in the past, kind of ruins it for the Nokia N9.

But of course, CPU clock speed is not the only way to go about judging a device. There are other aspects of the device which make up for a good and decent smartphone. The usability, performance and the overall feel and build quality of the device is something that a user will look into before buying a smartphone.

The MeeGo platform has been around for about a year and a half now and since there is no dedicated app inventory for the platform, it will have to rely on Nokia’s Ovi Store. There aren’t as many applications in the Ovi Store to be honest, which is a disappointment considering the fact that Symbian has been around way longer than other platforms. So that is where Symbian falls behind.

What might work in N9's favor might be its NFC capabilities, which will let you pair wirelessly with other devices and stream content without a hitch.

Moving on to the pricing aspect of the device in hand. The N9 is Nokia’s flagship, so there is absolutely no doubt that the device would be priced heftily. And if you look around for a while, you will find at least 2-3 Android handsets with similar or better specifications for a lesser price. Nokia isn’t the brand that it once used to be and hence the company cannot rest on its past successes. It is high time that they did something about it.

The N9 does look like a good start, but we fear Nokia is a bit late to the party here. But jumping to conclusions would not be a sensible thing to do, so let’s wait for the launch of the device. According to reports, the N9 could be launched within a month from now, so that should be something to look forward to.
