Nokia announces N950 successor to Nokia N8

Published on Jun 22, 2011

Nokia N9 launch stole the show at the Nokia Connection 2011 event in Singapore. The whole  N9 show quite frankly overshadowed the other phones launch.

The phone we’re talking about is the Nokia N950 which some of you might know. Here’s how. Well, right after the Nokia N8 was launched last year, talks of a successor started to heat up. Well, the Nokia N9 is not a successor to the N8 per se, but we weren’t aware of that back then.

This device was seen sporting a touchscreen and a physical slide out QWERTY keyboard. Shortly after that, newer reports broke cover which revealed that the N9 will be running on MeeGo. But just as people started getting excited about the device, it was reported that Nokia has decided to cancel the Nokia N9.

But it now turns out that the N9 is a different handset and the device that we saw in leaks is in fact the Nokia N950. This particular handset hasn’t made much noise in the web because of the fact that it’s a developers only handset. Yeah you heard it right, the Nokia N950 will not be commercially available like the N9, but will be produced in limited quantities. This comes as sad news for all you die hard texters, but Nokia has something else in mind. By making this a developer only handset, Nokia wants to improve the usability of the MeeGo platform and fix any bugs that are found. And developers think that the slide out QWERTY keyboard should be very beneficial to them to work with codes.

The device will bears resemblance to the N9 in terms of specs, but some differences can be spotted. This particular device will feature a fractionally larger 4 inch display which has a resolution of 480x854 pixels. On the processor front, both the devices will feature a 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM to run multiple applications without a hitch. There isn’t much info available besides that.

Developers would want to look closely at this one, because the device will not be up for grabs in large numbers. While there is no info on the launch of this handset, the N9 has already been provided to a bunch of developers which we assume is for preliminary testing purposes.
