Nokia not to launch the N9 in India

Published on Jun 22, 2011

The Nokia N9 was officially unveiled by Nokia yesterday in Singapore amidst speculations of the launch of a “market disrupting device”. Well, we’re not sure if the N9 would disrupt the market in any way, but it seems like there will be a few angry faces pointed towards Nokia.

Nokia has a strong fan base in developing nations like India, which incidentally is one of the very few regions where the company maintains dominance even today, though sales have decreased with the entry of other platforms into the country. And now the company instead of improving sales in the country, is going in the completely opposite direction.

The company has put up a check availability page where users will be able to check whether their country will be getting the Nokia N9. But in that list, there was absolutely no mention of countries like India, U.K, U.S or any African nation for that matter (we mention Africa because the continent has a large market for Nokia smartphones).

The unavailability of the N9 in the U.S can be explained since the company currently has no carrier support in the country. Though AT&T came very close to signing a deal with Nokia, it was pulled off at the very last minute.

Users are obviously very excited for the Nokia N9, given its trendy form factor with no physical buttons on the front, and a relatively rare operating system MeeGo. But the fact that India and other countries will not be getting it has certainly angered a bunch of fans. But some optimists believe that the list could be updated with new countries, though it seems very unlikely.

Similar strategy was seen with the launch of the Nokia N900 which made way to the Indian market after some months of its worldwide release.

Lets hope that Nokia doesn’t wait too long to launch the device, because for the price that the N9 is supposed to cost (Rs 25,000 – 33,000), we don’t think it’s worth the wait.
