The Samsung Galaxy S II is already available in some countries across the globe and Samsung doesn’t want to spare any efforts on the marketing of the device. Last month we saw an array of “extreme unboxing” videos of the Galaxy S II by tech reviewers, which were recorded in the strangest of locations like mountains, cliffs, while jumping off an airplane etc. This shows that Samsung is going all out on the marketing of the device, since they expect to sell more than 12 million units of the device.
And now as another marketing stunt, Samsung will be launching the device 20 miles into the sky attached to a space balloon. The device will be seen running in all its glory while it is up there. All this will be streamed over at Ustream so that the world can watch the device in action at the unlikeliest of places.
We think that Samsung has already proved a point about the Galaxy S II and that it might be over marketing the device a bit, but well it’s working for them so we can’t complain. The Extreme Unboxing videos had gone viral when they were uploaded and that is because most top blogs got the handset which assured that a large number of audiences could see it. The space balloon event will take place on the 15th of July, so be sure to catch the broadcast.
The HTC Sensation was launched recently in some countries, which has been considered as the closest competitor to the Galaxy S II. Samsung would definitely be aware of that, and would not want to leave any gaps in the marketing. This somewhat reminds me of the Google Nexus S, which was also launched into space. Though Google did that for scientific reasons of its own rather than to show off or market the device.
