RIM could be readying a 4.3 Inch ‘Superphone’ to replace the PlayBook 2

Published on Jun 29, 2011

RIM’s BlackBerry has been around for quite some time and has been one of the most widely used mobile handsets around the world. But since the past year or so, nothing has been going the company’s way. RIM has incurred losses in the past fiscal quarter and shares have taken a huge fall which has resulted in staff layoffs.

RIM is trying to do everything possible so that the company can get stable again. For that very reason, RIM showed off the BlackBerry OS 7 recently which will be rolled out with the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the company’s flagship. It almost seems like RIM has all its hopes set on the Bold 9900, but what else can the company do?

Well, the company has other plans too. An alleged successor to the BlackBerry PlayBook, called the PlayBook 2 was supposed to be in the making. But it now seems like the company wants to maintain focus on cellphones. New reports however, suggest that RIM has dropped the PlayBook 2 and will be replacing it with a QNX based smartphone. This smartphone apparently will feature a 4.3 inch display with a resolution of “900+” which is quite hard to figure out as of now, and also a 1.2 GHz processor, in fact is said to feature the same 1.2 GHz processor as the Bold 9900.

The company is said to be hesitant with the dual core chipset seen on the PlayBook due to battery draining issues. So it makes more sense to stick with the 1.2 GHz single core CPU.

RIM is currently going through a phase where there isn’t much time to think or experiment. Anything the company does has to be perfect for it to survive in the present market conditions.

Where were these handsets a year ago, when the market needed them the most? That particular question has been ringing in the heads of most BB users.
