Sailing in on three platforms Symbian, MeeGo and WP7, Nokia promises to be there for all
MeeGo will get timely updates promises Nokia
Published on Jul 8, 2011
Nokia recently unveiled the company’s new flagship, the N9 which will mark the re entry of the MeeGo platform into the cellphone market.
Well, the N9 has all the makings of being a popular smartphone given that it’s launched in the right markets at the right time. Also, there was an issue raised about the updates for the platform.
While Nokia is setting sail on three different ships (Symbian, MeeGo, WP7), it is obvious that a user would start worrying about timely updates, especially if the user is a future Symbian or a MeeGo user.
But Nokia doesn’t have plans of dropping the Symbian platform any soon with new leaks suggesting that Symbian is pretty much a priority with updates like Anna and Belle. WP7 however is being given top priority, so no worries there as well. That leaves us with MeeGo.
According to Nokia’s head of portfolio management, Klas Strom, the company plans to provide updates for the MeeGo platform over the years so as to keep the platform new and refreshed. He said on Twitter – “we will support Nokia N9 for years and release several SW updates. Not to worry”. This is very exciting news for those who were considering a switch to the MeeGo platform.
MeeGo Harmattan, the operating system to be used in the N9, brings some cool new features to the table like an all touch gesture where there will be no physical buttons on the platform, support for NFC and more.
There isn’t a lot of MeeGo phones launching anytime soon (as of now), so Nokia should be really committed to provide 1-2 phones with timely updates. And with the added burden of WP7, we don’t see how the company would manage to focus on three platforms at once. The development of Symbian however will be looked after by Accenture, so that’s a relief for Nokia. Let’s see how things will pan out for Nokia.
