Microsoft unveils four new WP7 handsets

Published on Jul 13, 2011

It was recently rumored that Samsung could be prepping a WP7 variant of the Galaxy S II. And it seems like the rumor is almost turning out to be true. Well, Microsoft has shown off four new WP7 devices from manufacturers like Acer, ZTE, Fujitsu and Samsung. But Microsoft merely showed off a video demo of the new handsets (which has now been made private) and did not give info about the device’s specifications.

MS proudly introduced the new producers of WP7 handsets with three handsets and also the WP7 variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II at the WPC 2011 Conference. The inclusion of the GS2 variant certainly raises the stakes considerably. But we’re not quite sure if this beauty will be running Samsung’s dual core Exynos CPU, which honestly is what makes the handset remarkable. The inclusion of a dual core CPU for a WP7 handset seems a bit too early and farfetched so we might see a 4.3 inch handset with the fancy Super AMOLED Plus display.

Something that is common with all the four devices shown off is the front facing camera. This confirms the claims that video calling support is coming to the platform. And with MS’ acquisition of Skype, things couldn’t have worked out better. The Mango update will certainly bring a lot new to the table. Microsoft has also been claiming that WP7 handsets will come with better resolution displays which will be interesting to see in the days to come.

Fujitsu’s WP7 handset apparently comes with a “great camera” and will be waterproof. And as far as the other two handsets from Acer and ZTE are concerned, they will be the regular WP7 handsets with its own set of feature list of course, but no info is available on that yet.

We think that the new line up of WP7 handsets have what it takes to impress tech savvy users. But the manufacturers or Microsoft wouldn’t want to wait too long to unveil the Mango update which is almost like a make or break deal for WP7.
