BlackBerry App World crosses 1 billion apps download milestone

RIM is on a roll. The Canadian handset maker is gearing up to launch seven BlackBerry OS 7 handsets in the market this year. Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO of the company recently announced at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting that BlackBerry 9900 will be launched in about a month. He also went on to say that the Bold 9900 will mark the largest global launching in RIM’s market history. “It may have delayed us, but we are going to come out ahead,” said Lazaridis.
Now we hear another piece of good news. The Blackberry App World has crossed the one billion apps download mark in a little over two years time frame. The dedicated App store for Blackberry phones and tablets is now in over 100 countries and is seeing an average of 3 million downloads per day.
While Google's Android Market and Apple's App store are at a giant leap in front of Blackberry, it's good to see RIM take up the challenge rather than throw up its arms. But the competition is immense, just last week or so, Apple crossed 15 billion applications downloads while Google Android achieved 4.5 billion apps download.
The Blackberry AppWorld Blog writes, "we’ve already started the move to BlackBerry App World 3.0 with the launch of Vendor Portal 3.0. The beta of BlackBerry App World 3.0 will start later this month, and we continue to evolve and improve the experience for both our developers and consumers."
The blog also highlights some of the popular apps which include Bellshare GmbH, Doodle Blast, EA Games, Jingu Apps, PolarMobile, ScoreMobile among others.
The BlackBerry App World greets you with "discover a world of possibilities" and it looks like the company is in the process of rediscovering itself too.
