Hitachi brings HD 3D display to mobile phones

Published on Jul 22, 2011

Hitachi has developed a 4.5" display for cell phones that promises to be brighter and clearer than anything seen before, thanks to its implementation of the Liquid Crystal Lens System.

The new crystal technology will make it possible for the display to support HD resolution on small screens like the 4.5’’. With it, a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels is achievable. Currently, Apple’s Retina display offers the highest resolution in the market at 960 x 640 pixels.

Hitachi’s invention will be the world’s first display supporting a resolution of 720p on a handheld device, making each picture crystal clear. Among other things, this will allow Smartphone users to view HD movies on their phones in native resolution.

Hitachi will also provide a brighter picture with this system than is offered by 3D these days. 3D displays use video overlay technology that projects images alternatively for the right and the left eye. This method, known as the Parallax Barrier Method, reduces the overall brightness of the image.

With the Liquid Crystal Lens technology, Hitachi’s display produces images in 3D by adding feature focusing for both eyes at the same time. This makes the image brighter manifold. The display uses In Plane Switching technology and offers better contrast while reducing colour loss at various angles due to the vertical alignment of the pixels.

3D on Hitachi’s display will be using lenticular lens technology or the stacked lens system, so you don’t need glasses to view the display. The screen will have an ITS display and along with a backlit LCD display panel, it will provide a wide viewing angle like the one on the iphone.

The new technology will offer a better resolution even in a 2D mode and will reduce crosstalk that sometimes appears on a 3D display being used in a 2D mode. All in all, a very exciting invention!
