Just as RIM was tweeting about the release of it’s new smartphones, final press shots of BlackBerry Touch and Torch 2 were leaked on the internet, fuelling rumours that these will hit the markets as soon as August.
Pocketnow got its hands on what are apparently press ready pictures of RIM’s new devices before the company could release the images themselves. In fact, RIM was expected to unveil the latest addition to their range of smartphones just about now.
With the pictures out, it looks like the phones will be too, maybe as soon as August. Both the Blackberry Touch (also known as the Volt) and the Blackberry Torch 2 will run on the new Blackberry OS 7.
The Torch 2 will include a 1.2 GHz processor with VGA resolution and 768MB of RAM. Of course, it has a sliding QWERTY keypad and a 3.2 ‘’ TFT LCD display. It will have a 5MP camera capable of recording video at 720p. It will support WiFi, NFC connectivity and an 8GB internal memory. In size, it is identical to its predecessor the Blackberry Torch.
The Blackberry Touch/Volt was earlier given the name Monaco for its CDMA version and Monza for its GSM version. It is slated to have a 1.2 GHz processor and 768MB of RAM as well. It will have a 3.7 ‘’ WVGA display, 3G connectivity, 5MP camera, 4GB internal storage and Bluetooth. It will be a touch only device and will measure 120x62x11.5mm.
The Torch 2 has been much talked about and probably doesn’t hold any surprises anymore. The Touch/Volt is yet to be confirmed by RIM themselves, leaving room for something new to come into the picture.
Even though RIM’s phones may not need the dual core processors that Android smartphones carry, a little more of technical advancement is probably what RIM needs to get back into the game in a big way. Despite being backed by the OS 7, these new smartphones may not be competition enough to the high end Android phones doing the rounds just yet.
