The Nokia Eseries device has earned itself quite a reputation since its inception long back – particularly with business and professional users.

However, the recent growth in the smartphones market over the past few years has seen the advent of high-end devices such as the iPhone, HTC Hero, and the BlackBerry Bold. And, undoubtedly these new devices are giving tough competition to the Nokia Eseries smartphones.

On first impression, the Nokia E72 isn't a bad looking device. It feels light in the hand, has a nice metallic-silver lining and a full QWERTy keyboard, which will certainly please users that have no intention of getting on the touchscreen-train.

That said, it does look a lot like a BlackBerry, which is a bit of a shame, since Nokia used to be something of an innovator within the telecommunications industry. However, nowadays it seems its designers' are happy to just follow convention and lift ideas from their contemporaries.

As we said, the Nokia E72 is quite a good looking device and this will certainly score it some points with professionals that demand both sharp style and functionality. In this respect, the E72 is a good handset. Plus, it has all the functions, such as email, internet, and office applications, that you'd expect from a device aimed at business and professional users.

Before moving further, let's check the spec sheet of this device. Nokia E72 is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard, Micro-USB connector which supports charging, High-Speed USB 2.0 and 3.5 mm Nokia audio connector.

It comes with an 8 GB MicroSD memory card (with hot swap), support for up to 16 GB, 250 MB free user disk space and BP-4L 1500 mAh Li-Ion standard battery.

The other key features of this device include Bluetooth version 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate, A2DP, 5 megapixel camera (2592 x 1944 pixels) with autofocus and flash, 5x digital zoom and inclusion of a standard 3.5 mm audio jack, as opposed to the E71's 2.5 mm jack.

Preloaded with the latest version of Nokia Messaging, Nokia E72 supports multiple simultaneous email accounts for the users. You can access business emails and personal emails easily with the help of this feature. For instant messaging (IM), Nokia E72 supports Gtalk, Yahoo and Ovi Chat.

Once you have the phone switched on you can begin setting up your email accounts, which is done in several easy steps in the devices built-in Set. Wizard.

The E72 supports the following email clients: Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and Mail for Exchange. And while the support is adequate, the Nokia E72's screen is rather small, which does make viewing emails a bit of a chore – especially if you're used to a larger screen.

You can get work emails in real time with support for Mail for Exchange and Lotus Notes Traveler and access up to 10 personal email accounts instantly. For instant messaging, you can chat with friends and colleagues in real time through Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk and other leading instant messaging services.

As with most Nokia smartphones, the home screen layout is fairly uniform. You have the time displayed in a digital clock on the left, the day and date in the top right hand corner and a list of icon links to messages, email, media, browser and pictures taking centre stage.

Again, this layout is perfectly adequate, everything you’ll use regularly is easily accessed, but it certainly won’t win any prizes and, unfortunately, this seems to be a running theme with the Nokia E72.
