We put the new Nokia E5 up against the HTC Legend to see which device offers more value for money to the users
Published on Dec 16, 2010
The new Eseries phone, the Nokia E5 is a mid-range Symbian device ideally suited for your business needs. It comes equipped with loads of social networking and email features. The QWERTY-enabled smartphone features a 5 megapixel camera, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Whereas, the HTC Legend sports a sleek uni-body design with a brushed metallic finish look. It comes with a stunning 3.2 inch, OLED HVGA display, enhanced HTC Sense experience and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash.
We compare the Nokia E5 against the HTC Legend to see which smartphone device comes out with better vital statistics.
Screen
The Nokia E5 doesn't have a touchscreen, instead sporting a 2.4-inch display with just 320x240 pixels on offer. You can cram a surprising amount of information into the screen including photo contacts, application shortcuts, email and calendar notifications, and lots more. There are several different screen arrangements to choose between and the whole thing is quite flexible. However, the screen doesn't rotate when you turn the Nokia E5 in your hand, and this along with its small size makes it less than ideal for web browsing.
The HTC Legend's screen measures 3.2-inches, but it lacks the wow factor in the resolution department. But with that being said, it's still quite a ample finger playground, and capitalized on its 320x480 AMOLED screen via HTC's expertly engineered virtual keyboard. The keys are large and offer great corrective typing features, so much so that it is almost like your phone knows what you want to say before you type it.
Winner: HTC Legend
Camera
The Nokia E5 sports a 5 megpixel camera, with flash, a panorama mode, and a potentially useful sequence shooting mode that has a range of settings that go down to taking one phone every half hour. However images weren’t the best we've ever seen being rather washed out and lacklustre. The panorama mode, too, came up with very thin, wide photos that aren't really all that useful when you transfer them to a computer.
The HTC Legend packs an admirable 5.0 megapixel camera that offers competent images and passable videos. The camera comes equipped with an LED flash that has been more or less effective when we've needed them to be.
Winner: Nokia E5
OS
The Symbian S60 toting Nokia E5 comes with the dual home screens system that works really well. You can switch between two home screen designs with the merest hold of a button. You can set up one wallpaper and set of shortcuts for staid old business use, and another more funky set for when you are let loose.
Whereas, the HTC Legend was introduced with Android 2.1 OS at the time of launch in India, but now the device has been upgraded to Android 2.2 as per the recent reports. With the updated Android version, the HTC Legend has an edge over the Nokia E5 on the OS department.
Winner: HTC Legend
Connectivity
The presence of Wi-Fi on the Nokia E5 is a real boon and it sits alongside the HSDPA support to make this a good handset for data communications. The Wi-Fi sniffer that you can place on the main screen is a plus point too. This will alert you when you are in the presence of a network, and you can hop onto it for web browsing or whatever else you fancy pretty easily. Also, it supports Bluetooth and A-GPS.
The HTC Legend comes armed with superb connectivity features, It packs 600 MHz processor, similar to that found in Apple's iPhone 3GS. This means that it can still go 0-60, but not as fast as some of the other smartphones out there. The device also features Accelerometer, GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, etc.
Winner: HTC Legend
Price
The mid-end Nokia E5 costs Rs. 12,699 in India. Whereas, the HTC Legend smartphone is priced at Rs. 25,990 in India. Although, the Legend is priced almost at the double amount compared to Nokia E5, the device offers loads of features to the users at that price. However, Nokia E5 is a perfect device for those who need a new smartphone within a tight budget.
Winner: Nokia E5
Verdict: The HTC Legend comes with spectacular features at a high price range for the users. It seems to be the clear winner on the specs front. However, the Nokia E5 is another sleek smartphone, ideally suited for those who want to buy a feature-rich smartphone within limited budget.
