HTC has unveiled a range of high-end smartphones recently. In its Desire series, the two new devices launched in the global market are the HTC Desire S and the HTC Desire HD. We compare the features of these two newly released devices to see which one packs the best features for the users. Check out the comparion below in case you are planning to buy a new HTC device.

Form:
HTC Desire S - 115 x 59.8 x 11.63 mm, 130g
HTC Desire HD - 123 x 68 x 11.8 mm, 164g

The HTC Desire HD is slightly bulky compared to the Desire S. However, both the devices are almost equal in measurements and sport sleek design. On the visual front, the HTC Desire HD is a little more angular, somewhat similar to the Samsung Galaxy S II. Although, the slimmer devices seem to be a new trend but we are still in favour of – larger but thinner handsets - as less curvature on the corners do impart a very appealing appearance. Still, the Desire HD is a tad heavier but not that heavy that you may find it hard to carry around.

When you compare the screen sizes of the devices, the HTC Desire HD comes with a larger screen of the two at 4.3-inches, while the HTC Desire S sports a 3.7-inches screen. We'll cover the display aspect of both the devices in more detail later.

There's no doubt that both smartphones are top quality HTC handsets. There is marked resemeblance in the visual and other features of the devices. Still, we can say that the HTC Desire HD has a design which slightly confirms to the contemporary trends and looks all the better for it. We can say that the HTC Desire HD has the upper hand in this department for sure.

Winner – HTC Desire HD

Display
On the display front, the HTC Desire S comes with a 480x800 pixels resolution, capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch and a proximity sensor for auto-rotate. At the same time, the Desire HD offers somewhat similar setup but the touchscreen is an S-LCD, Sony’s own LCD technology, not the Samsung AMOLED display.

Sony Ericsson made the switch to S-LCD largely not mainly due to shortage of supply in AMOLED screens from Samsung, but supposedly the S-LCD’s are really efficient when it comes to the battery usage and at the same time, it features a similar 180-degree viewing angle through Sony’s VSPEC III technology.

Although, there is not major differences between the two smartphones in this department but the Desire HD has an edge as it comes equipped with a larger screen display. So We find that the HTC Desire HD is a winner on this occasion.

Operating System
There's not much to compare on the operating system for both the devices, as each packs Google’s Android operating system. If the Desire HD uses Android 2.2 Froyo, the Desire S runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.

The HTC Desire S seems a notch ahead on this front as it has received the Android 2.3 treatment, which is certainly the better and a step advance of the two versions present on these devices. Also, the Desire S promises an improved keyboard and general tweaks all round.

It is expected that the Desire HD may soon be getting Android 2.3 update, but until that happen, it has a slight disadvantage compared to the Desire S. Also, there's ‘HTC Sense’ UI integrated on both the devices with the Android OS. In some cases, users can encounter slowdown issues due to these combined features.

And the HTC Desire S emerges winner in this round due to the presence of Gingerbread OS on this device.

Winner – HTC Desire S

Storage
The HTC Desire S has 1.1 GB of internal storage on board, 768 MB of RAM and it supports MicroSD and MicroSDHC cards. On the other hand, the Desire HD packs 1.5 GB of storage space, with the same RAM and card support. Not a marked difference, but the 0.4 GB difference in space means the Desire HD is the obvious choice on the storage front for sure.

Winner – HTC Desire HD
