Form Factor
The Nokia 7230 is a slider phone, while the Sony Ericsson Elm is a candybar device. Compared to Sony Ericsson Elm, Nokia 7230 sports slightly smaller size due to its slider form, although it's a very minor difference when you put both the devices side-by-side.
The Sony Ericsson Elm measures 110x45x14mm, while the Nokia 7230 is 98x48x14.8mm.
Verdict: Draw - there's not much to choose here; it depends on which form factor suits you the best.
Screen
Nokia 7230 displays an average 2.4 inch screen with a resolution of 240x320 pixels. However, you may not be able to perform much web browsing with this device due to its lack of 3G.
Whereas, the Sony Ericsson Elm comes with a 2.2 inch screen display, which is even smaller than the Nokia 7230 handset. However, it provides superb display feature right from texts to web pages crisply and with lots of colour.

The Nokia 7230 offers camera with a resolution of 3.2 megapixel, which is a basic entry level specification from a recently launched device.
The Sony Ericsson Elm is equipped with a high resolution 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. It offers better image quality with its camera compared to Nokia 7230.

Operating System
The Nokia 7230 operates on Nokia's S40 platform. The device runs on older Symbian platform when already more advanced S60 version is out there. Furthermore, it's simplicity may either be a draw or an annoyance to you. However, if you are looking for a basic handset you may well find it cool enough.
On the other hand, Sony Ericsson Elm uses Sony Ericsson's own proprietary Java-based OS. Although, there are many advanced and upcoming operating platforms such as Apple and Android, we were simply satisfied with the Elm's more than capable platform.

Price
Price is the one big factor which makes the big difference between these to devices. While Nokia 7230 is available at a price of Rs. 6,000 in the Indian market, the Sony Ericsson Elm will cost you more than double as it is priced at Rs. 13,995 in India.

Points to Ponder
With no 3G, Wi-Fi or GPS on the Nokia 7230, the device is comfortably small and has a well made keyboard. There is also a 3.5mm top mounted headset jack.
The Sony Ericsson Elm is a Green device as it is produced from recycled materials. It boasts of superb battery power, and you can also upgrade its storage capabilities to 8GB using the microSD card slot. This makes ample room for music, video and documents. A big let down is that there is no universal headphone capability.

Overall Verdict?
The Sony Ericsson Elm appears to be an obvious winner. It's a superb eco-friendly device and a perfect smartphone barring slightly overboard costs. It is too costly compared to Nokia 7230, but you certainly get much more advanced features at this price.
However, one can not easily discard Nokia 7230 handset. It's an entry-level mobile phone, but it is a well designed handset with allure for the no-frills user. If you are looking for a basic phone within a moderate budget, then this is the device recommended for you.
