Sony files a trademark for 'Xperia Sola' in Europe and US

Sony has filed a trademark for 'Xperia Sola' with the USPTO and OHIM.

Filed on January 30, 2012 by the Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, the trademark application for Xperia Sola has been marked under the mobile phones and accessories section.

The application (serial number: 85528680) does not reveal much about the device but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill from tossing up a few possibilities.

While there is a high possibility that Xperia Sola could be Sony's next offering, the likelihood of the Xperia S being rebranded as Xperia Sola in Europe and USA can not be ruled out either.

According to the Phandroid, 'if it’s an unannounced device, it probably will not be released until well into the second half of this year, probably around the holiday season. Most manufacturers are looking to cut down on the number of phones they release in 2012, and to apply for the trademark of a phone which isn’t in the upcoming line-up seems strange.'

We haven't heard from Sony as yet confirming or declining either of the possibilities.

At CES 2012, the Sony Xperis S – the first smartphone from the Sony stable without the Ericsson branding – managed to garner significant attention, amidst tough competition from Huawei, Samsung, Nokia, ZTE among others.

Expected to hit the markets in March, the smartphone features a 4.3-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. A impressive 12.1-megapixel camera sensor, 1.5 GHz dual core processor and a 32GB internal storage among a host of other exciting features makes it one of the top handsets to look out for in 2012.
