KYMI rounds up all that is known and rumoured about Sony's functional and sleek new offering, the Xperia Z1s

Sony sure seems to be on a roll these days, with each phone under its Xperia portfolio scaling new heights of popularity every day. Things are expected to get even more exciting for the tech giant and its loyalists now that the Japanese major is reportedly prepping a brand new offering, the well endowed yet compact Xperia Z1s.

The Xperia Z1s was briefly spotted on Sony's official website by Geeky Gadgets before it was removed from the internet. Carrying forward all that Xperia Z1 functionality in a compact form, the Xperia Z1s is reportedly the mini version of the flagship that is slated for an international release. In fact, it is the international version of the newly released Xperia Z1f in Japan.

Like the Xperia Z1f, the Xperia Z1s is believed to sport a compact form with a well defined rectangular shape and slightly curved edges. It reportedly packs in a 4.3-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. A quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor apparently powers the device that comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in storage.

Sony is reportedly prepping its newbie with an IPS display and the phone should offer users clarity and sharpness on its screen, especially given its smaller size. We do hope that Sony is able to tackle the problem of viewing angles on its latest handset - despite gorgeous resolutions and higher than average pixel densities, Sony handsets suffer from poor viewing angles.

Keeping up with tradition, the handset is expected to sport a 20 megapixel Sony Exmor RS rear camera and a 2 megapixel Sony Exmor R front sensor. Though its connectivity options are not yet confirmed, the handset is said to be powered by a 2,300 mAh battery.

Those who love taking pictures on the go and yet crave a more compact handset that can easily slip into their pockets will love all that the Xperia Z1s is rumoured to offer. Portability, durability and functionality seems to be the name of the game for Sony's latest offering, its most exciting feature being its high-end, sophisticated camera set-up and dedicated photography apps.

The Xperia Z1s should ideally carry a recent build of the Android Jelly Bean operating system out of the box and should be in line for future updates of the platform sooner than later. In fact, one of the features that makes the Xperia Z1s an enticing option is its operating system. Though earlier rumours suggested that the handset carries Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, new leaks suggest that the handset is in fact powered by the newer build of the operating system, version 4.3 Jelly Bean. Of course, the phone will most likely be the first of Sony's handsets to move over to the new and improved Android 4.4 KitKat platform as well.

Sony is expected to carry on another one of its traditions and give the Xperia Z1s a waterproof casing. If it does so, its newbie will stand apart from its peers in more ways than one. Compact, functional and durable, the Xperia Z1s is sure to rule the roost of smaller, portable handsets.

The Xperia Z1s reportedly sports slightly curvier edges than its elder sibling, the Xperia Z1, but packs in similar functionalities. A far as build quality and form factor go, we are hoping to see the same premium quality and sleekness of the Xperia Z1 on the smaller Xperia Z1s.

Those who prefer smaller handsets are not really spoilt for choice these days, with most compact handsets excluding high-end features in favour of sleekness of size. Sony might just be the player to change all that and the well endowed Xperia Z1s may just be its most formidable game changer yet.

If it is indeed unveiled in the coming days, the handset should make it way to retail stores in the coming months. We hope to see it in India by the turn of the year. Given its specs, the Xperia Z1s is expected to be price in the upper mid-range segment. We will be keeping our eyes and ears open for Sony's next big offering - stay with us on KYMI.
